Kalgoorlie to Salmon Gums

We spent the morning exploring Kalgoorlie. The boys went to the visitor information centre to get their certificates printed for the Nullabor Links. I think it's fair to say they got value for money for their $70. I'm just glad mum & I weren't playing. I think it would have taken longer & many more balls would have been lost.

We grabbed our last real coffee before leaving town. We took a drive up to the Superpit so we could show the kids how big it was in daytime. We'd been up the night before but couldn't really get great photos of the headlights. It looked really eerie.

We left town & headed out to the Hannan Tourist Mine. It's great family value at $30. The kids got to get up close to the vehicles that are used in the mines.
Some of the statistics on these vehicles are crazy. The mine has 33 of these vehicles in operation, at a cost  of $4.4million dollars each. They only last 6-7 years in use. One tyre is worth $40,000. They must make money for it all to be worthwhile. 1 in 6 truckloads of ore that is removed from the mine, will contain gold.
Isaac showing just how big they are.,

Hey, that load is more valuable than any gold (most days anyway).
An old prospectors hut. They did it tough & very few found their fortune. Now those with the resources & technology are reaping the rewards.

Isaac making a cup of tea...
We all got to try our hand at gold panning. By the look on Michaels face, I don't think he found anything of value :-(
Kalgoorlie...it's just another city now. It's so much bigger than I expected.

We left the dust of Kalgoorlie for the coast. I need water again. We've stopped 100km from Esperence. It's a community caravan park & costs $16 per night. Power, shower & toilet. That's all you need (after $150 for 2nights at Kalgoorlie).
