Alice Springs

A good day to catch up on grocery shopping. It's such a shame that tourism is struggling in Alice Springs. There are so many day trips. The main problem is that all the major airlines fly straight to the rock so no one needs to visit Alice.

We saw the Todd River in full flow again though. Who would have thought so much rain in the NT in January. Everyone keeps apologising but it's special to see :-)

Today we finally arrived at 'the big red rock'. The kids were very impressed (especially Michael). I lived here 19 years ago but I'd forgotten how amazing it really is....truly magical!!!

Out & about in Alice again

School of the air this morning. They have some amazing technology available to them. I'm even more daunted by the thought of starting distance education :-)

Stop at the Royal Flying Doctor Service this afternoon. Kids watched a movie & then saw a replica plane.

An old graveyard we found in the industrial area whilst looking for caravan spares. Average age of residents was 33years. It's not surprising when you think of how hard their lives were.
A trip this afternoon to Simpsons gap. The rain hasn't stopped for days. Most of the crossings over the Todd river are now closed. Sections of the Stuart highway are also closed. We may be in Alice Springs for a while!

Out & about in Alice springs

We left camp about 8am & headed about 200kms out of Alice Springs to Gosse Bluff. This is a huge crater caused by a meteorite during the dinosaur age. We climbed to the top for a better look.

We then headed into Redbank Gorge...about a 20minute walk up a riverbed....pool noodles in tow. There was water in the gorge so we were able to swim through the gorge...rock walls metres in the air either side of us. It was special.

On the way back into town we realised how much rain town had seen throughout the day. We were on our way home when we noticed water in the Todd river.  It had just started to flow. The last time this happened was April 2014...and prior to that December 2012.

A bit of art and cultural learning

http://www.alpityestudio.com/

Whilst in Alice Springs we visited a family friend's art studio. This is where aboriginal ladies come to paint & have a chat. We met Charmaine who was very keen to teach the kids about her culture & style of art. Another moment to remember. The link to the gallery is under this photo :-)))

Kings Canyon to Alice Springs

Today we took the Merinee loop from Kings Canyon to Alice springs. It was slow going. Corrugated, dirt road. It was slow & steady but stunningly beautiful.

Kings Canyon Rim Walk

Our amazing children....aged 4,6,8 & 10 years of age...did a 7.7km walk around the rim of Kings Canyon. Proud mum & dad.

We put the kids to bed last night dressed. Our alarms went off at 4.30. We had Rees & Sarah for a sleepover too. It looked like a refugee camp. We started our climb with 500 stairs up a steep incline. Sarah & Rees came with us as our personal guides. The kids were so fantastic. They were all so interested, especially Isaac. Michael carried Charlotte the last 1km. That not bad for a 4 year old. Everyone needs to see this beautiful part of the world. A definite highlight.
Charlottes table & chair...
Rees & his girls having a rest

Heading down the canyon to Garden of Eden.

Garden of Eden
350 year old cycad. Very important to the local people.

Get out there & see this gorgeous country!

Kings Canyon Creek Bed Walk

This is a 2.6km walk. We thought we'd test the kids endurance. They loved it!
